Professional Development

Success as an accounting and financial management professional requires much more than technical skills. AFM offers professional development activities that will help you focus on improving skills employers demand.

The workshops are optional and do not count for course credit. They are strictly available to AFM students at no additional cost.

  • Attend our sixth annual Professional Futures Conference (PFC) in September 2011.  Professionalism is the name of GAME!! There are prizes. 2A AFM students should check this out. Look on UW-ACE for more information.

    • Audrey Wilson of Gemini Models presented images and fashions that would suit any office, highlighting businesswear with clothes from Conestoga Mall. Find out what should be essential in your wardrobe to make the best first impression for your co-op work terms - download Audrey's list of essential items for men and women.
  • ICAO Board of Associates - Each year the ICAO forms a Board of Associates (BoA) with 2 student representatives from each university in Ontario. Howard Leung (1B, AFM-PA) and Arthur (Yari) Wang (1B, AFM-PA) are the new ICAO Board of Associates representatives. For 2008/2009 the ICAO selected Ian Gutwinski (3A, AFM-PA) and Nilofer Ahmed (3A, AFM-PA) to represent the University of Waterloo, who both went on to be named Reps of the Year.

In March, all first-year students were invited to meet representatives from the professional associations (CA, CMA, CGA, CFA and IIA) and staff from potential co-op employer firms at Financial Management (FM) and Public Accounting (PA) Night.

The two networking events brought together employers, industry associations and students from specialty Accounting and Finance programs at uWaterloo. AFM Public Accounting students joined their CA-bound peers in Math and Science Programs at PA Night, which featured staff from the “National 6” accounting organizations. AFM Financial Management students joined their peers in the Computing and Financial Management Program at FM Night, which featured staff from financial services firms, corporate finance departments within large public corporations, and operations teams within government departments and agencies. Over 80% of registered and eligible students attended these events.

The Robert Half Professional Futures Conference (PFC) is designed for students entering into their second year of undergraduate study in the School’s Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management (BAFM), Bachelor of Computing and Financial Management (BCFM), Bachelor of Science (BSc) - Chartered Accountancy and Bachelor of Mathematics (BMath) - Chartered Accountancy program. PFC is kicked off with a pre-conference or launch event between January and March and culminates with a multi-day conference event in September. Through the Conference, we strive to instil within our students a sense of having entered into a professionally focused integrated learning program with outstanding colleagues. The aim of the Conference is to make students “co-op employer-ready”. Through an agenda of activities and events PFC delivers an integrative, industry-focused professional development experience that will lead to effective co-op employment seeking strategies for our students and contribute to their success on the job. Ultimately, these students may be candidates for clients of Robert Half within three to six years.

Typically held at both a conference centre and on campus, settings allow for lecture-formatted workshops and a variety of practical active-learning activities. Students’ hard work is rewarded with desirable, relevant prizes. The timing of the PFC makes it ideal for offering students a chance to polish their professional image and practice routines that will prepare them for the co-op experience and for a lifetime in the workforce. The event kicks off an important term for students, most of whom will be undergoing the co-op job search process for the first time within weeks of the Conference. During the subsequent winter term, students will be engaged on their first of four co-op work assignments. Graduating students often cite the PFC as a memorable experience and the one that most signified the beginning of the integrated component of their undergraduate degree program.

Becoming successful in the accounting and finance professions requires more than just technical skill. It also draws upon your ability to integrate and apply the knowledge you've gained over the course of your education, as well as the teamwork and communication skills needed to work well in groups and relay your ideas clearly to other people.

Every year, students in their 4B term in the Accounting and Financial Management, Math/CA, and Biotech/CA programs compete in the BDO WATCase Competition - an integrative competition that challenges the students to apply and integrate the skills they've learned to a case based on a real-life company. The competition helps to hone the students' practical accounting and finance knowledge, report-writing abilities and presentation proficiences.

WATCase 2011: Best Transfer Trucking Company

September 2011 - A group of students from the School of Accounting and Finance placed Best Transfer, a privately owned trucking company from Guelph, under a financial microscope.

Upper-year students in Accounting and Financial Management (AFM), Math/CA, and Biotech/CA recently delved into the company’s financial background as part of a case study for SAF's annual BDO WATCase Competition.

This year, the 11-day challenge required students to portray a client services team member in order to prepare an interim deliverable and briefing memo on issues surrounding the status of a new truck order and the implementation of a new dispatch system...read more about the 2011 BDO WATCase Competition.
