The Professional Student concept is the alignment of body, mind and action in taking ownership and being proactive in your learning experience while aspiring to be the professional you've always wanted to be. Learn and benefit from seeking out the coaching you need to be successful, acknowledging that there are many skills and competencies yet to be acquired.


Academic Advising

You are invited to consult with Carol Treitz, the AFM Undergraduate Studies Coordinator, or Prof. Darren Charters, the AFM Undergraduate Officer, about your specific course of study. As a first point of contact, Carol and/or Darren can assist you in navigating through course requirements and offer advice on how to meet academic expectations.

Academic Skills Coach - Coaching for success!

Dave Logan, your Academic Skills Coach, emphasizes individualized success planning. Like athletes, Professional Students like you, can benefit from coaching to take your academic achievement beyond your current performance levels. Dave Logan is a qualified professional who can provide confidential counselling to help with personal concerns, academic success, and approaches to studies and exams.

Academic Skills Workshops

The academic skills training is done through workshops as well as through making use of the resources posted here on the website.  Questions arising from using these academic skills tools can be addressed to Lynn Graham.

  • The next Academic Skills Workshops will be offered in the Fall 2011 term.

SAF Tutoring Centre

The SAF Tutoring Centre offers assistance in all the required First-Year and 2A Term AFM courses - AFM 101, 102, 131, 201, 202, 203, 209, 291; STATS 211; MATH 109; ECON 101, and 102.

Located in HH 2101, the Centre is staffed by upper-year SAF students who can provide peer tutoring in course work and offer insightful information based on their own experiences in the course(s).

Tutoring of AFM courses is also available through the Village 1 Residence, where many first-year students live. Formal tutoring is available through the V1 Tutoring Sessions as well as informal tutoring through Peer Leaders of the Accounting and Finance Living-Learning Community.

Tutoring for First Year and 2A Term AFM courses

  • For AFM students:
    Tutoring Center - HH 2101
    • Mondays through Thursdays
    • From 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
    • Fall and winter terms during the weeks of classes

  • For any student taking a first year AFM course:
    Tutoring in Residence - V1, Multi-purpose room
    • Mondays
    • From 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
    • During the fall and winter terms when classes are in session
AFM
The School of Accounting and Finance is the only English speaking professional school of its kind in Canada. We offer 2 undergraduate (Accounting and Financial Management and Computing and Financial Management) and 3 graduate (Master of Accounting; Master of Taxation; PhD in Accounting) programs to provide students with the technical, analytical, evaluative, and communication skills needed to prepare for successful careers in public accounting, finance, industry, government and not-for-profit sectors. In conjunction with the Faculties of Mathematics and Science, the School also administers 2 undergraduate programs (Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy; Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy) and 1 graduate program (Master of Quantitative Finance).
